WPC vs PVC Wall Panels: Which Should You Import?

An honest comparison of WPC and PVC wall panels for importers: substrate, thickness, weight, fire rating, installed cost, freight and service life, with guidance on which product fits which customer and when to stock both.

WPC vs PVC Wall Panels: Which Should You Import?

Two Products, One Question

Importers ask this constantly: should I stock WPC wall panels or PVC wall panels? The honest answer is that they solve different problems, and the fastest way to lose money is to treat them as substitutes for each other in the same sales conversation.

Both are extruded PVC-based boards used for interior wall decoration, and both are sold by the square meter at prices that overlap in the middle of the range. But the substrate, the weight, the feel, the fire performance and the installation method all differ, and so does the customer who buys them. Here is a straight comparison, including the parts that are inconvenient for a supplier to say out loud.

What Each Product Is

WPC wall panel

A composite of PVC resin, wood flour and calcium carbonate, foamed or semi-foamed, typically 9 mm to 25 mm thick, with a density of 500 to 750 kg/m3 and a weight of 5 to 9 kg/m2. It feels solid, takes a screw, and can be installed with clips over battens or bonded directly. It is the product that reads as a finished interior material.

PVC wall panel

A thinner, lighter PVC profile, usually 5 mm to 10 mm thick, with a hollow ribbed section behind the face, density around 400 to 600 kg/m3 and weight of only 2 to 4 kg/m2. It is normally 200 mm to 300 mm wide with a tongue-and-groove joint, installed with staples, adhesive or a simple clip. It is the product that reads as a low-cost renovation sheet.

Cost: The Real Comparison

The unit price gap looks bigger than it is once you compare installed cost.

  • Material. A typical WPC panel lands at USD 1.60 to 5.50 per m2 FOB; PVC at USD 0.90 to 2.50 per m2 FOB. On a 1,000 m2 project that is a difference of roughly USD 700 to 3,000 before freight.
  • Freight. WPC at 6 to 7 kg/m2 occupies far more weight per container. If you ship 3,000 m2 of WPC you may not fill the container by volume, but if you ship PVC you will hit volume first. Always calculate landed cost per square meter, not per container.
  • Installation labor. PVC goes up faster, maybe 30 to 50 percent faster, because it is lighter and needs less substrate preparation. Over a 1,000 m2 project, that can be 30 to 60 fewer labor days, which in a high-wage market can be a bigger number than the material difference.
  • Accessories. WPC usually needs clips, battens, corner trims and end caps, adding perhaps 8 to 15 percent to material cost. PVC often needs only adhesive and a trim.
  • Repair and replacement. A damaged WPC panel can usually be removed and replaced individually on a clip system. Glued PVC often cannot be repaired without cutting out a section.
Do the arithmetic per finished square meter, including trims, clips and labor, and the WPC premium typically shrinks from 100-200 percent of the product price to roughly 30-60 percent of installed cost. That is a much easier number to sell.

Fire Rating: Read the Report, Not the Brochure

This is the area where buyers get misled most often. Both product families can achieve a GB 8624 B1 classification, but the result depends on the full formula, the thickness, the surface film, and critically on how the sample was mounted during the test. A panel tested free-standing may not behave the same way when bonded to a plywood substrate on a corridor wall.

  • Ask for the test report that matches your thickness, colour and construction.
  • Ask which standard and which class: GB 8624 B1, EN 13501-1 class B-s1,d0 or ASTM E84 Class A are all different claims.
  • For corridors, stairwells and assembly spaces, local code may require a non-combustible or a specific smoke class that neither product meets. Check before you promise anything.

Which Should You Import?

Import WPC if

  • Your customers are fit-out contractors, hotel and restaurant developers, or mid-to-high-end retailers.
  • Your market values appearance, tactile quality and durability, and can absorb a USD 2.50 to 5.00 per m2 selling price.
  • You can hold 8 to 15 SKUs in stock and support installation advice.
  • You sell into hot and humid climates where a thin film on a hollow board fails quickly.

Import PVC if

  • Your customers are budget renovation contractors, landlords, or sellers of ceiling and wall sheet packages.
  • Price per square meter is the deciding factor in the purchase.
  • You sell ceilings, wet areas and utility spaces where appearance is secondary.
  • You need very fast stock turnover with low capital per container.

Import both if

Most successful distributors do. PVC covers the volume and the entry-level price points, WPC carries the margin and the project business. The key is to separate them clearly in your catalogue and in your sales script, so a customer sees a considered range rather than two products that look alike and confuse them.

Questions That Settle It for a Customer

  1. Is the surface going to be touched, leaned on or hit by trolleys?
  2. Does the wall need to hold a TV, shelf or handrail?
  3. Does the client care about the sound when you knock on it?
  4. What is the budget per installed square meter, not per board?
  5. What fire class does the building authority actually require?
  6. How will a damaged panel be replaced in two years?

Answer those six questions honestly and the choice usually makes itself. Selling the wrong board once costs far more than the margin on the order.
