What PS Wall Panels Are
PS wall panels are decorative wall coverings made from polystyrene foam. In most export products the core is moulded or extruded polystyrene with a density typically between 0.3 and 0.6 grams per cubic centimetre, and the surface carries a decorative finish. Because the foam is moulded rather than printed flat, the shape itself is the product: fluted slats, waves, diamonds, brick relief, stone relief and geometric grids are all formed in the panel.
Two builds dominate the market. The first is a PS foam body with a printed and UV-coated decorative film, sold ready to install in wood grain, marble, concrete or matte colour finishes. The second is a paintable PS body with a primer or fiberglass-mesh skin, sold for on-site painting so a distributor can carry one SKU and match any project colour. Both are interior products unless a specific exterior grade is quoted.
Why Lightweight Matters
The weight advantage is the commercial argument. A PS panel piece typically weighs 0.4-1.5 kg, which works out to roughly 1-3 kg/m2 across a wall. Compare that with 12-25 kg/m2 for an MDF or plywood feature wall, or 18-30 kg/m2 for a plaster or stone feature. One person can carry, position and fix a full height wall panel without a second pair of hands, and no anchors are needed on most substrates.
It changes freight as well. A 20GP container holds roughly 3,000-5,000 square metres of PS panels depending on relief depth, because the product is light and the panels nest or pack efficiently. For an importer, that means the freight cost per square metre is a fraction of what a heavy board product costs, and the material can be sold in small quantities profitably.
Shapes, Sizes and Relief Depth
| Profile | Typical size | Relief depth | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fluted / slat panel | 2900 x 120-160 mm strips | 8-20 mm | Feature walls, reception, TV walls |
| 3D wave | 1220 x 2440 mm sheets | 15-25 mm | Retail, hospitality, ceilings |
| Geometric diamond or rhombus | 300 x 300 mm, 500 x 500 mm tiles | 10-20 mm | Small feature walls, columns, bar fronts |
| Brick or stone relief | 1220 x 2440 mm, 600 x 600 mm | 10-25 mm | Restaurant, cafe, industrial style interiors |
| Plain 3D and paintable blanks | 1220 x 2440 mm | 5-15 mm | Designer walls painted on site |
| Cornice and ceiling profiles | Project specific | 5-20 mm | Ceilings and cornice details |
Panel thickness generally runs 10-30 mm. Deeper relief looks more dramatic but costs more to ship because the panels take up more volume, and deep grooves collect dust, which matters in hotels and restaurants where cleaning crews work to a schedule. Relief of 10-20 mm is the practical sweet spot for most interiors.
UV-Coated or Paintable
A UV-coated panel is finished at the factory, arrives ready to install, and comes in a range of 10-30 colours and effects: wood grain, marble, concrete, matte white and metallic. The cured surface is wipe-clean and typically reaches a pencil hardness of about 2H. Its limitation is repainting: covering a factory finish, especially a gloss or metallic one, is difficult and usually not recommended.
A paintable panel carries a primer that accepts water-based acrylic or emulsion paint. Coverage is typically 0.15-0.20 kg per square metre per coat, and two coats with 2-6 hours between them gives full opacity. The surface can be lightly sanded with 320-400 grit between coats. This version is popular with distributors and designers because it decouples stock from colour: one SKU can be sold for any scheme, and touch-ups on site are invisible in a way that factory-coated panels never are.
Installation
The substrate needs to be flat within 2-3 mm over 2 m, clean and dust free. Most linear profiles are installed vertically with the groove or flange concealed, and the first panel sets the line for the whole wall, so a laser or plumb line is worth the two minutes it takes.
- Set out the wall and dry-fit the first three or four panels to confirm the pattern, the corner detail and the finish at the ceiling.
- Apply construction adhesive, PU or MS adhesive in beads 200-300 mm apart plus a continuous perimeter bead, at roughly 0.2-0.5 kg/m2.
- Add double-sided tape on vertical and ceiling work for immediate hold, and a few screws through the concealed flange or groove where the panel is heavy or overhead.
- Press the panel into place and check it with a straightedge; work along the wall so each panel locks the previous one.
- Leave a 2-3 mm expansion allowance at the ceiling, floor and corners, and cover it with a trim or shadow gap.
- Finish with corner trims, end caps and skirting, and fill any small gaps with a colour-matched filler approved for foam.
Two people typically install 30-60 square metres per day on flat relief profiles and 15-30 square metres per day on deep 3D patterns, because deep panels need more careful alignment. A 12 square metre feature wall usually takes one crew three to five hours including trimming and finishing.
Honest Limitations
- The surface is soft. Furniture, trolleys, chair backs and children will dent it, so avoid corridors, chair rails and any wall that takes impact.
- Standard polystyrene foam is combustible. Always specify a flame-retardant B1 grade and require the GB 8624 or equivalent fire test report for the finished panel.
- Keep panels away from open flame and from heat above roughly 60-70 degrees Celsius, including heaters, cooktops and hot light fittings.
- It cannot carry load. A television or heavy shelf must be fixed to the wall structure behind, with the panel cut around the bracket or a recess formed.
- Not suitable for fully wet areas, and not for exterior use unless a specific exterior grade with a sealed coating is offered.
- Deep relief collects dust in the grooves; a matte finish and shallow relief are easier to maintain.
Applications
PS panels sell best where a strong visual effect is needed quickly and cheaply, and where weight matters: television and sofa feature walls, hotel headboard walls, restaurant and cafe feature walls, retail displays, office feature walls, reception desks, ceilings, exhibition stands, temporary and rental fit-outs, and prefabricated or modular buildings where every kilogram counts. They are also a natural upsell alongside PVC marble sheets and flexible stone, since the same customer often needs both a flat stone-look wall and a shaped feature wall in the same project.
MOQ, Packing and Pricing
Minimum order quantity is typically 100-500 square metres, or one mixed 20GP container across several profiles and colours. FOB pricing usually sits between USD 2-8 per square metre, driven by coating type, relief depth and panel size. Lead time is commonly 15-30 days.
Packing is normally cartons of 5-20 pieces with corner protection, and deep-relief pieces are sometimes individually wrapped because the raised areas chip easily. Because the product is bulky rather than heavy, buyers should compare offers on cubic metres per container rather than on weight, and should always confirm the loading quantity for the exact profile rather than assume a generic figure.
Buyer Checklist
- Fire test certificate for the finished panel, not the raw foam.
- Foam density, because it drives dent resistance and screw holding.
- Whether the surface is UV coated or paint grade, and which paint system is approved.
- Relief depth, and the loading volume per square metre for that depth.
- A signed physical sample in the exact colour and profile.
- Written confirmation of the adhesive the supplier recommends for the buyer's substrate.
PS panels win on weight, speed and design freedom. They lose on impact and heat. Sell them into the right wall and the customer comes back for the next project.
